Health insurance cost by age, 21 to 64 (2026)
The typical marketplace Silver plan for one person before tax credits costs $559 a month at 21, $715 at 40, $1,518 at 60 and $1,678 at 64.
How age changes the price
- One curve per state. Every insurer in a state uses the same age curve: a fixed price factor for each age. 42 states use the federal default curve (CMS: state specific age curve variations).
- A 3-to-1 limit. For adults, the price at the oldest age can be at most 3 times the price at 21 (45 CFR 147.102: fair health insurance premiums). Under the federal default curve, 64 costs 3.00× age 21.
- Children. Under the default curve, children up to 14 share one price and ages 15 to 20 rise each year.
- No age rating in New York and Vermont. Every adult pays the same price there.

Frequently asked questions
How much is health insurance for a 60-year-old in 2026?
The typical marketplace Silver plan costs $1,518 a month for one 60-year-old before tax credits ($1,164 for Bronze), using the federal default age curve that 42 states use. By state it ranges from $952 in Maryland to $2,352 in Wyoming.
How much is health insurance for a 64-year-old in 2026?
The typical Silver plan costs $1,678 a month before tax credits ($1,287 for Bronze), about 3.0 times the price for a 21-year-old.
Can insurers charge older people more?
Yes, within a limit: for adults, the price for the oldest age can be at most 3 times the price for a 21-year-old, and each state sets one age curve that every insurer uses (45 CFR 147.102). New York and Vermont do not allow age rating: every adult pays the same price.
Do prices keep rising after 64?
No. The age curve has one factor for everyone 64 and older (CMS age curve table). Most people become eligible for Medicare at 65 (Medicare.gov).
Do tax credits help older buyers?
Premium tax credits depend on your household income (HealthCare.gov), and most people who buy a marketplace plan get one. The prices on this page are before tax credits; check your own price after credits on HealthCare.gov or your state's marketplace.
